  13. My place in London:
    PLACE: The Tower of London
Brief description: The Tower of London sits on the North bank of the River Thames. Though this castle served many porposes, it’s mainly remembered by its use as a prison in the 16th and 17th centuries.
From the outside this place actually looks really small but once you get inside it is almost like a mini city.
Extra information: The Tower of London is an internationally famous monument and one of England’s most iconic structures. William the Conqueror built the White Tower in 1066 as a demonstration of Norman power, siting it strategically on the River Thames to act as both fortress and gateway to the capital. It is the most complete example of an 11th century fortress palace remaining in Europe.
It has been the setting for key historical events in European history, including the execution of three English queens. http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/488
The Tower of London has been used as a fortress to protect a prison, used to imprison (for many an accused, it was the last sight they saw on earth), as a home for kings and queens, and as a royal mint and treasury.
Today it houses the Crown Jewels and is keeper to the Royal Ravens. The ravens are flightless birds due to the fact their wings are clipped and this tradition points to the superstition that the English still believe dating back from time of Charles II that when there are no longer ravens in the Tower both the White Tower and the Commonwealth of England would fall. http://www.britainexpress.com/articles/London/tower-of-london.htm
I first read about it in an English Teaching book, Discoveries 2 (Longman). I was a teenager and there was a lesson telling the story of two little princes locked to death in the tower by his uncle, so he could claim for the throne. He was supposed to rule in his nephew’s name until he was mature enough for such responsibility. Instead, he imprisoned the young prince and his little brother in one of the towers, let them die there and took the throne. The story said that the bodies of two little boys were found when workers were doing some improvementes to the building.
It really impressed me and I still remember the drawing.

PLACE: The Victoria and Albert museum.
Brief description: this museum is focused on the decorative arts and design. It spans 5000 years of art ranging from ceramics to textiles, and jewellery to furniture.
    TIME: 16:27

Extra info: The Museum was established in 1852, following the enormous success of the Great Exhibition the previous year. Its founding principle was to make works of art available to all, to educate working people and to inspire British designers and manufacturers. Profits from the Exhibition were used to establish the Museum of Manufactures, as it was initially known, and exhibits were purchased to form the basis of its collections
In 1899, Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of a new building designed to give the Museum a grand façade and main entrance. To mark the occasion, it was renamed the Victoria and Albert Museum, in memory of the enthusiastic support Prince Albert had given to its foundation.

    PLACE:
Camden Town - Basement Tea Rooms

    Brief description:
Aside from all the wonderful and exciting hidden gems in each corner of Camden Town, there's also this place described in the video, the Basement Tea Room. To find it, you must first find the Camden Horse Stables. From there, find the set of stairs that go to the toilets, and then follow the signs. You’ll arrive at a magical little vintage place full of tea varieties, cupcakes, cakes, and other sweets, coupled with a very interesting and homely ambience. It costs about 13 pounds for a beautiful tea setting, along with delicious treats to match it. There's also an awesome selection of books to choose from, to read while enjoying your tea. And there's even a vintage store as well! Definitely the perfect place for me.
