"The Thing around your Neck" by Chimamanda Adichie.

This short story will be your HOME READING ASSIGNMENT. In the light of what we've been reading in class, making comments and analysing... CHOOSE (at least) 5 questions from the set below and answer them. 

  1. What is the THEME of the story? (Reread what we discussed in class, c.f "The Sniper")
  2. Connect the story to your own experiences: have you ever had any experience similar to what the author describes?
  3. Define these key terms (you MAY use a monolingual dictionary)
  4. Why do you think the author has chosen to write in the second person narrative?
  5. What is the story saying about the migrant experience?
  6. None of the characters in the story is named. Why?
  7. Explain what the narrator means by “white people who liked Africa too much and those who liked Africa too little were the same –condescending”.
  8. What contributes to the narrator’s feelings of not belonging and her sense of alienation?
  9. To what extent do the characters in the story have options, choices and free will?
  10. List the stereotypes that abound in this story.

  2. 1. This story is about the difficulties of being a foreigner young black woman in America.
    “The thing around your neck” refers to the feeling of choke and suffocation that overrun you when there is something hidden, something that you can’t or don’t want to tell anybody.
    I've found the story quite shocking and it made me think of uprooting and loneliness.
